From 4th grade geography lessons, just about every child knows about the sacred Ganga River of India. But when I found myself at the banks of this river, I had learned the depths of their devotion and love for what they call ‘Ganga-ji:’ ‘The Mother Ganga’…the Mother. Her waters are the lifeblood of her people. This body of water is not just called the Mother, she is the Mother.
And from this profound love, the people who live along her banks in the town of Vernasi is the site of a most spectacular and moving experience. Each and every night these humble people put the river to bed and give thanks for all the Mother has given them in blessings and profound love in return. This ceremony has been done throughout the ages.
Seven altars are set up at the top of the riverbank steps. A priest in training is assigned to each altar. They begin by blowing the conch shell long and loud—creating a sacred tone for all to hear. Bells are rung and drums are beat. Along the shore, others are creating their own sounds. The young priests work in harmony and choreograph their moves as they present each element to honor their beloved Mother. Incense perfumed the air for the Air element and brass containers of bright flowers swing over their back.
As we witnessed the stirring experience from small boats just offshore, I felt a lump in my throat and a full and grateful heart. Tears of joy and love to feel connected to the people and their I meaning river sprang to my eyes when I looked back at the dark horizon. Hundreds of floating baskets with a single burning flame began to float across the horizon. They flowed gently with the current representing the individual and collective prayers to Ganga-ji. Hope and peace swelled gently in the dark. Good night, sweet Mother.
