Sufi Music – Experiencing a Mystic Tradition

Last night we had the pleasure of hearing live Sufi music.  The Sufi tradition is the mystic aspect of Islam and dates back many centuries.  When the music is played, it becomes a meditation for those in the room.

A mystic tradition focuses on creating a direct experience of God.  Sufi music is designed to facilitate this direct experience.

I prepared myself to hear beautiful music but what I got was so much more.  As the drums and the singer began, I felt a surge of energy in my body.  The power of the voices and the instruments resonated through me.  I found myself moving my body and clapping my hands—not just to the external beat but to the internal rhythm inside me.  The energy built—not just in the room but in me and I felt alive, present, and connected.

I can’t say I am a mystic yet, but I loved the experience of meditating through Sufi music.  And I bought a CD so I can listen again at home.  As I progress in my meditation, Sufi music will be part of this.  More than that I will remember the sacred aspect of music—one way to connect with the divine within myself.
