Inspired by Sufi Music

January 4th, 2010 by sacredtraveller

Entering into the home of Sadia Dehlvi was an experience for me. I wasn’t sure exactly what I should have been expecting when I walked into the apartment. I was surprised to see the musicians sitting there on the floor and even more surprised when it became apparent that this evening was going to be about music. The music was like nothing I have experienced before. The music was so ecstatic and joyful. It clearly was designed to praise god in such a way that is like nothing in our western culture. I greatly enjoyed the music and found it very inspiring. I think this joy and praise in god is something that I would like to emulate in my own music. Looking at playing music as an act of praise for god provides a different frame of mind for me to practice my instrument in. This music and the whole evening were beautiful, wonderful and inspiring.
