The Power of Meditation

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010 by sacredtraveller

I learned the mechanics of meditation a few years ago – mantra selection, physical positioning, selection of a proper space, etc.  But, while I had the mechanics nailed – I never quite worked meditation into any sort of a regimen.  Over the course of the last few days – and after meeting with a Hindu guru, a Sikh warrior, a Tibetan Buddhist monk and a Krishna swami – I’m seeing thing differently.  Each in their own way articulated a value proposition for daily meditation.

Meditation is not merely a stress-reliever.  It’s way more than that – it’s an important key to busting through barriers to what I want and unlocking my personal potential.  If I can exercise my body every day in order to optimize my physical well-being, then I can certainly exercise my soul every day in order to optimize my emotional and cognitive well-being through greater consciousness!

Everyday Spirituality: a Lesson from a Tibetan monk – Jennifer Schmitt

Friday, January 1st, 2010 by sacredtraveller

Today is New Year’s Day and we were fortunate enough to meet with the head Buddhist Monk at a Tibetan monastery in Deer Park in Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first teaching. I learned many things about Buddhism that I didn’t know such as the goal is to unleash an unlimited future, which excited me even more since it is similar to the mission of the Wright Leadership Institute. In our meeting, we quickly came to find out that the monk ended a trip he had been on just to meet with us which was a huge gift and honor.  His had an amazing presence about him; he was playful, inviting, and mutual in the ways he shared about his journey. I’m working on all these things in my own life – trying to be a more substantive presence while being genuine and sharing my vulnerability.

Listening to him, I felt encouraged on my growth path to continue being more truthful and genuine. I’m also inspired to include more meditation in my life. Rather than making meditation into a big significant task, he talked about making meditation a very simple straightforward part of any day. He talked about counting 21 breaths while driving home from the office or taking 5 minutes out of the day at any time to meditate. I loved how simple and approachable his lessons were and I look forward to building an even better 2010 by incorporating all of this into my daily life. As if his lessons weren’t enough, he closed our meeting by asking permission to give us a blessing. It was very moving and inspiring and I am excited to go into my new year with a shift in perspective that will serve me every day.

Stress Busters! Let go of your stress, and revitalize your productivity and creativity

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 by Beryl

Can you accept that you can’t control everything–especially with the current financial crisis and additional stressors around money? Most people try to knuckle through the stress, and end up frozen and unable to move forward. Choose specific strategies to keep yourself moving through the stress instead of going into a tailspin.

1) Research has shown that meditation is a stress buster. Calm your mind down by meditating for 10-20 minutes using a mantra. As your mind wanders, keep bringing yourself back to the mantra.

2) Call someone and express yourself! People who have a good relationship with their emotions get more done and are more productive!

3) Do something to get in your body. Endorphins are your friend!

So bottom line – letting stress get you down is a choice! Use these tools and bust loose!
